QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AT HOME OR IN GOSPEL COMMUNITY GROUPS

Sermon manuscript available at emmausrbc.org

  • When the LORD went out into Egypt to strike the Egyptians with this tenth plague, he did two things. What were they? (Hint: one was an act of grace, the other an act of justice).
  • How were these two things, grace and justice, displayed at the cross of Christ?  Why did it have to be this way for our sins to be forgiven and for God to be just?  (See Romans 3:26)
  • What are the two errors that men make when they are offended by a story like this regarding the LORD himself putting men to death? In other words, what are the main two things they get wrong?
  • What does it mean to fear the LORD? Why is it imperative that we fear him? Should this fear of the LORD cause us to run from him or to him? How is it possible for us to run to a God so holy and awesome given our sin?

  • The LORD was merciful, kind, and patient with Moses in this moment. How so? How has God been patient with you?
  • How does God reassure Moses that he will keep his promises in this passage? How does he do the same for us today?
  • Why is it important for us to know about the covenants that God has made with man throughout history?

  • Is the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart a minor or major theme in the Exodus story? Discuss.
  • Why did God harden Pharaoh’s heart?
  • Was it wrong for God to harden Pharaoh’s heart?
  • Was Pharaoh unique? In other words, are the hearts of other men off limits to God, or is he sovereign over the hearts of all men?
  • How can God be sovereign over the hearts of all men, and yet men still be free and accountable to God?
  • Why the process? Why the process of the Exodus, human history, the story of your own life? Why election and reprobation? What is it for according to the scriptures? Hint: Exodus 9:16; Romans 9:22.

  • Discuss how the deliverance that God worked for Israel is a picture of the greater act of deliverance worked by Christ. What did Christ redeem us from and to? How has Christ plundered Satan’s kingdom?
  • What are signs for? Discuss the signs that God worked through Moses. Discuss the signs that God worked through Christ. What did they signify?
  • Moses was a reluctant deliverer. Why did Moses emphasize this in his writings?
  • God uses common things to accomplish his purposes. He can use you and me, therefore. Discuss.

  • Put yourself in Moses’ place. What would you be concerned about if God were calling you to accomplish this mission?
  • Why should we consider it a good thing that Moses’ initial reply to God’s call was, “who am I?” Why didn’t God seek to build Moses up to remove his doubts? What did God emphasize instead to encourage Moses? (See v. 12)
  • Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob used the name Yahweh to refer to God. Why does God say in Exodus 6:3 that the LORD did not make himself known to them by this name? What is the meaning of that?
  • What did God reveal to Moses concerning the significance of the name Yahweh? In other words, what meaning did God attach to that name?
  • What did God mean when he referred to himself as the “I AM”?
  • What effect should the name Yahweh have upon the people of God? What should it make us think, feel, and do?

  • What could we know about God apart from special revelation? What would we do with that knowledge if left to our sinful ways? What are some things that we know about God only through special revelation?
  • What is the significance of God revealing himself to Moses in a burning bush that was not consumed? How does this fit with the name, “I am”, revealed to Moses in the next passage?
  • Why do you think God stressed his holiness with Moses from the outset?
  • God also revealed himself as gracious and kind. What effect do you think this had upon Moses’ heart? What effect should it have upon ours?
  • Knowledge of God’s self-existence, holiness, and kindness are like the A-B-C’s of our understanding of God. What difference should these doctrines make in our lives?

  • Discuss the things that Moses must have forfeited when he decided to side with the Hebrews and forsake the Egyptians.  According to Hebrews 11,  what drove him to this decision?
  • What evidence is there in the passage that Moses had the heart of a deliverer? What were some of the good qualities that Moses possessed that would be useful in leading Israel out of Egypt and towards the promised land?
  • For 40 years Moses was refined in Midian. How did his character change? Why was this change necessary in preparing Moses for the Exodus event and for all that was involved in leading Israel those many years in the wilderness?
