QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AT HOME OR IN GOSPEL COMMUNITY GROUPS

Sermon manuscript available at emmausrbc.org

  • Chapter 19 of our confession divides the law of Moses up into three categories: moral, civil, and ceremonial. Can you define these terms (see 2LCF 19 for help)? How are these categories helpful in understanding the law of Moses and its application to the New Covenant people of God?
  • What errors could result from failing to see the civil (judicial) and ceremonial laws of Moses as being unique to Israel?
  • You may be innocent as it pertains to the civil laws of this land, but no man is innocent as it pertains to God’s moral law. Discuss.
  • On the last day all men will stand, not before Moses, but Christ. He will judge according to the moral law. We will either have him as Savior or Judge. We had better have him as Savior. Discuss.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AT HOME OR IN GOSPEL COMMUNITY GROUPS

Sermon manuscript available at emmausrbc.org

  • How will contemplation of and appreciation for the marvelous victory that Christ has accomplished for us in his life, death, burial, and resurrection help us to witness to others regarding the good news?
  • How will contemplation of the judgment that awaits all who are not in Christ motivate us to witness?
  • Discuss the significance of Jethro’s response? Consider that he was a gentile. Consider what he confessed to knowing. Consider his worship, and also the meal that he ate before God and with Israel. What is the significance of these things?
  • Why have I said that the goal of witnessing is worship?

  • What does it mean to walk by sight? What does it mean to walk by faith? Does walking by faith require us to ignore what we see with our natural eyes?
  • How might a Christian learn to be driven, not by their passions and cravings, but by the Word of God and the Spirit of God? How might a Christian practice this way of life so as to become mature in it?

How might a Christian learn to find their satisfaction in God and in Christ? Is this something that can be learned, is it a gift that must be given, or is it both?

  • Why does the Lord not take us immediately to glory after we believe upon Christ? Why must we endure this time of difficulty in this world?
  • What is sanctification?
  • How does God sanctify his people?
  • Why is it so important for us to maintain the perspective that we are sojourners?

  • Discuss the fact that humans are able to sing. In what way is singing an even more fitting instrument of praise than speaking?
  • Beginning with Exodus 15, what are the songs of praise recorded in scripture about? What should our songs be about?
  • In the days of Moses the LORD accomplished Israel’s redemption, he judged the Egyptians, and he led Israel to indwell them. Compare and contrast this with what was accomplished by Christ. Do we have more or less of a reason to praise? Discuss.

  • Read 1 Corinthians 10:1–13. What does this passage from Paul teach us regarding the proper interpretation of Exodus?
  • If the story of Israel in Egypt corresponds to our bondage to the Evil One, if the story of the deliverance of the Hebrews corresponds to our salvation in Christ, and if Israel’s entry into Cannan corresponds to our entry into the new heavens and earth, what aspect of the Christian life does the experience of Israel’s wilderness wanderings correspond to?
  • Discuss the ways in which the LORD has led you personally, compassionately, faithfully, clearly, and defensively.

  • What are positive laws? “Positive law” was defined in a previous sermon and referenced in this one. What are they? Why are we to consider the laws about Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the consecration of firstborn males as positive laws? Hint: by positive law, we mean laws that are added. Positive laws are contrasted with moral laws.
  • What was Old Covenant Israel supposed to get out of these rituals concerning their past, present, and future?
  • What might we learn from these laws concerning the Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the consecration of firstborn males?
  • We are not obliged to obey these laws. One, why? Two, what positive law (festival) are we obliged to keep? What does our festival teach us regarding the past, present, and future?

  • Why is it important that we see the tenth plague as an act of divine judgment and not as an act of human vengeance? What is the difference between vengeance and justice? Why will human justice always be limited? Why will divine justice be perfect and complete? When will divine justice be perfect and complete?
  • When Pharaoh asks to be blessed by Moses, when we learn that Israel left Egypt “a mixed multitude”, and when we learn that the Passover could be celebrated by foreigners, provided that they joined themselves to Israel by faith, what does that remind us of concerning Israel’s ultimate purpose as it pertains to the nations?
  • What can we learn about Christ and the Christian life from the Passover?
