QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AT HOME OR IN GOSPEL COMMUNITY GROUPS

  • Put yourself in Moses’ place. What would you be concerned about if God were calling you to accomplish this mission?
  • Why should we consider it a good thing that Moses’ initial reply to God’s call was, “who am I?” Why didn’t God seek to build Moses up to remove his doubts? What did God emphasize instead to encourage Moses? (See v. 12)
  • Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob used the name Yahweh to refer to God. Why does God say in Exodus 6:3 that the LORD did not make himself known to them by this name? What is the meaning of that?
  • What did God reveal to Moses concerning the significance of the name Yahweh? In other words, what meaning did God attach to that name?
  • What did God mean when he referred to himself as the “I AM”?
  • What effect should the name Yahweh have upon the people of God? What should it make us think, feel, and do?

  • What could we know about God apart from special revelation? What would we do with that knowledge if left to our sinful ways? What are some things that we know about God only through special revelation?
  • What is the significance of God revealing himself to Moses in a burning bush that was not consumed? How does this fit with the name, “I am”, revealed to Moses in the next passage?
  • Why do you think God stressed his holiness with Moses from the outset?
  • God also revealed himself as gracious and kind. What effect do you think this had upon Moses’ heart? What effect should it have upon ours?
  • Knowledge of God’s self-existence, holiness, and kindness are like the A-B-C’s of our understanding of God. What difference should these doctrines make in our lives?

  • Discuss the things that Moses must have forfeited when he decided to side with the Hebrews and forsake the Egyptians.  According to Hebrews 11,  what drove him to this decision?
  • What evidence is there in the passage that Moses had the heart of a deliverer? What were some of the good qualities that Moses possessed that would be useful in leading Israel out of Egypt and towards the promised land?
  • For 40 years Moses was refined in Midian. How did his character change? Why was this change necessary in preparing Moses for the Exodus event and for all that was involved in leading Israel those many years in the wilderness?

  • Why is it important to see that Exodus picks up where Genesis left off and continues that story?
  • The Exodus story begins with the powers of this world oppressing God’s people. Trace that theme as far back as you can into Genesis. Where is that theme rooted?
  • How is God’s faithfulness displayed in this passage? How is his sovereignty over all things displayed? What difference should this make for the people of God as they sojourn in this world?

  • When were the promises made to Abraham regarding the land of Canaan fulfilled?
  • Why was Israel exiled from the land? Did God break his promises concerning their “everlasting” possession of the land?
  • Why did expectations of a greater Exodus grow during the Babylonian captivity? Was there no evidence of something greater yet to come before that time? Discuss.
  • How does the New Testament view the Exodus in relation to the person and work of Jesus Christ?
  • What is our future hope? How does this relate to the Exodus event?

  • If we look at Exodus and ignore what happened before, what are some of the wrong conclusions that we might come to?
  • The Exodus displays God’s covenantal faithfulness. How so? What confort should this bring to us?
  •  The Exodus is not the main event in God’s plan of redemption. How do we know this? How is the Exodus related to the main event (Christ’s finished work)? How can the Exodus help us to understand and appreciate the work of redemption that Christ has accomplished?

  • The book of Exodus is about more than the story of deliverance from Egyptian bondage. What else is it about? How is this story (the whole story) analogous to our life in Christ?
  • Exodus begins with Israel building cities for Pharaoh. It ends with Israel building a tabernacle for God. What does this tell us about the purpose for our redemption in Christ Jesus?
  • The law of God and the covenant that God made with Israel are at the heart of Exodus. Why is this significant? What similarities are there between Israel’s experience and ours? What are some major differences?

  • Hebrews 11 is not so much about the doctrine of justification by faith alone, but the walk of faith. Show how this is true from the text.
  • What does it mean that “faith is the assurance of things hoped for”? How might the word “substance” (see NKJV) be more helpful than the word “assurance”? How does faith in the heart give substance to future hopes?
  • What does it mean that faith is “the confidence of things not seen”? In other words, talk about some of the things that we believe to be true (concerning the past and the present) that we cannot see with our physical eyes.
  • What does it mean that “by [faith] the people of old received their commendation”? How does faith in the heart — that is, assurance of things hoped for, and confidence of things not seen — produce a commendable life; a faithful life that God approves of? Stated negatively, why should we not expect people to walk faithfully before God if they do not have this “assurance of things hoped for” and “confidence of things not seen”?
