QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AT HOME OR IN GOSPEL COMMUNITY GROUPS

Sermon manuscript available at emmausrbc.org

  • How did Christ fulfill the moral law?
  • How did Christ fulfill the civil and ceremonial laws of Moses?
  • Discuss some of the ways that the Law of Moses pointed forward to Christ and prepared the way for him?
  • When we speak of Christ’s passive obedience we have in view the way that he submitted to the will of the Father to suffer in the place of sinners. What do we mean when we speak of Christ’s active obedience? Why does his active obedience matter?
  • What gave Jesus Christ the right to rise from the dead and to give eternal life to those who come to him?
  • Are you united to Christ by faith?

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AT HOME OR IN GOSPEL COMMUNITY GROUPS

  • What are the three uses of the moral law of God?
  • What is the pedagogical use of the moral law?
  • Though it is true that God uses the moral law to convict believers of sin and to move them to repentance and continued faith in Christ, the law is not our pedagogue in the way that it is for those not in Christ. How so?
  • What is the normative use of the law?
  • Why should Christians memorize the Ten Commandments and be concerned to understand what God’s law requires and forbids?
  • The law is written on the hearts of those who have faith in Christ. What difference does this make when compared to the law being written merely on stone?

  • According to the covenant that God made with creation in the days of Noah (Genesis 9),  what are common governments to concern themselves with in their law codes?

  • What does the first commandment forbid? What does it require?
  • What are sins of omission? What are sins of commission? And how do we violate the first commandment in both of these ways?

  • How is God’s law useful to the Christian?
  • What needs to change in your life as it pertains to the first commandment?

  • What difference does it make if people view the scriptures in general, and God’s law in particular, as having their origin in man rather than God?
  • Why are the Ten Commandments given to Israel first? Why did God speak these laws to Israel directly? Why did he write this with his own hand?
  • The Old Covenant was a covenant of works substantially, but God’s grace was certainly present. How so? Discuss.
  • What was God doing with Israel when he gave them the Ten Commandments (and all of the other laws)?
  • Why was Israel especially obligated to keep God’s law?
  • How does this passage apply to us under the New Covenant?

  • What were the terms of the covenant that God entered into with Israel?
  • Was the Mosaic Covenant a covenant of works or a covenant grace?
  • Does this mean that the saving grace of God was not available to men in those days? Discuss.
  • Why did God enter into this covenant with Israel? What was the purpose?
