About Emmaus
Emmaus is a Reformed Baptist church in Hemet, California. We are a community of Christ followers who love God, love one another, and serve the church, community, and nations, for the glory of God and for our joy.
Our hope is that you will make Emmaus your home and that you will begin to grow with us as we study the scriptures and, through the empowering of the Holy Spirit, live in a way that honors our great King.

Gospel Community Groups
Gospel Community Groups are small group Bible studies. They are designed to provide an opportunity for the members of Emmaus to build deeper relationships with one another. Groups meet throughout the week to discuss the sermons from the previous Sunday, to share life, and to pray.

Emmaus Essentials
Emmaus Essentials classes are currently offered online Sundays at 9AM. It is through our Emmaus Essentials (Sunday School) that we hope to experience an in depth study of the scriptures and Christian theology. These classes focus on the study of systematic theology, biblical theology, church history, and other topics practical to Christian living.

Multi-Generational Church Ministry
At Emmaus we believe that God has given parents, especially fathers the authority and responsibility to train and instruct children up in the Lord. In addition, we believe that God has ordained the gathering of all generations, young to old, to worship Him together in one place and at one time. Therefore, each and every Sunday our children worship the Lord alongside their parents and other members of God’s family.

Thoughts
- The traditional definition for covenant is “a contract or agreement between two parties” (Eaton’s Bible Dictionary). While this definition may provide insight in some facets of understand our relation to God more explanation is needed. The covenant between God and man is not a fifty-fifty agreement. God in is infinite power and wisdom brought us into a covenant of life with Him for His glory.
- The first covenant made with Adam is considered a covenant of works also known as a covenant of law. In a covenant of works God enters into an agreement with an individual or group of people defined by keeping commandments. If the individual or group obeys the commands of the Lord they will be blessed. If they disobey the commands they will be cursed. Adam and Eve were in a covenant of works with God. Adam and Eve were blessed when they obeyed God. When they disobeyed God by eating the fruit they were cured and died.
- All of the covenants can be categorized as either a covenant of law or covenant of grace. The Adamic and Mosaic Covenants are covenants of law. “Obey and you will be blessed.” “Disobey and you will be cursed.” The Abrahmic, Noahic, Davidic, and New Covenant are covenants of grace. The end result is always in God’s hands. Making Abraham as a great nation was all God’s doing, saving Noah and his family was all God’s doing, making David’s throne eternal through Jesus Christ is all God’s doing, and the perfect sacrifice for our sins was all God’s doing! Those who are saved rely on God’s doing through the covenant of grace. Those who will not be saved are relying on their own works through the covenant of law.

Bible Text: Psalm 51
1. When you sin, have you learned to repent and run to God? Or do you struggle with shame and hiding from God as Adam and Eve did? Share and explain.
2. In the case of David, one sin leads to a series of other sins, as he attempted to cover his sins rather than repent and confess. Have you seen this progression in your life? Why do we often try to cover our sins rather than confess and repent?

Hello church!
This coming Sunday (March 23rd) we will be singing a new song called “Not in Me.” Before we sing it together on Sunday, I wanted to share the song with you so that you could get a jump start on learning it and know why I have chosen to add it to the list of songs we sing at Emmaus.
If you’ve been keeping up with Emmaus Essentials, you’ll notice how closely this song coincides with Chapter 11 of the LBC (Lesson 19 from the week of March 9th). This song is all about the fact that there is nothing that we can possibly do to earn forgiveness – our justification – but that only in Christ is our righteousness found. It is a beautiful declaration of the Gospel. Read the lyrics below and listen to the song:

Thoughts
- Chapter 3 of the London Baptist Confession of Faith explains the decrees of God. In addition, Joe expounds on this topic in lessons 8 and 9 in the Emmaus Essentials course on the London Confession of 1689 found here.
- There are a few prerequisites to understanding the decrees of God. First, it is often unclear to see how God is going to use a tragedy or difficult time in someone’s life while it is taking place. Joseph saw nothing but complete evil and despair when his brothers sold him into slavery. It was only after the fact that Joseph saw the plan of God. Second, the dichotomy of God’s sovereignty and mans responsibility is something one will never completely understand. While we will never know in this lifetime how it all works the Bible strongly teaches that God is sovereign and has ordained things while still giving us the responsibility to act and response to the choices we face.
- The fact that God has a purpose and is sovereign over all should fill us with humility and confidence that God will finish the work He has started in our lives.
Discussion Questions
- How does it make you feel that God is in control of everything?
- How do you think Joseph felt when is brother sold him into slavery? Did he know what God was going to do?
- If God is in control of everything why do bad things happen to good people?
- What has God promised to those who love Him? (Romans 8:28-29).
- What should be our attitude when difficult events happen in our lives?
- Ephesians 1 says God chose us for salvation before the earth was even created. Why did he do that?
- If God has chosen us for salvation and is in control of everything what should be our response?
