Sermon: Selected Texts: Some Thoughts on the Doctrine of Salvation

I do hope that you’ve been encouraged and edified in our study through the gospel of John. 29 sermons have beed devoted to this book so far, and we have just recently completed our consideration of chapter 6. A few weeks ago I had mentioned that, after working through chapter 6 verse by verse, I would devote one sermon to discussing the doctrine of salvation. This is that sermon. My reason for doing this is to, hopefully, bring clarity to some of the difficult things that have been stated in John 6.

It is here in John 6 that Jesus himself reveals that some people have been given to him by the Father. It is those – all whom the Father has given to him – who will come to him and believe in his name (6:37-39). It is here that Jesus reveals that no one can come to faith in Christ unless the Father draws that person – no one is able (John 6:44, 65). It is here that Jesus reveals that the will of the Father for him is that he would loose none of those whom the Father has given to him, but raise them up on the last day (6:39-40).

To state things in a most direct way, a careful consideration of John chapter 6 demands that the Christian come to terms with this truth: that it is God who determines the salvation of sinners. God not only provided the way for salvation through the death, burial, and resurrection of the Son, but he is also at work applying the salvation earned by Christ to a particular people – to an elect and chosen people – as he effectively draws them to himself through Christ and by the Holy Spirit.  Read the rest of Sermon: Selected Texts: Some Thoughts on the Doctrine of Salvation »

  • “God first gave the fifth commandment to the Israelites. He promised they would live long in the Promised Land if they kept it. God’s people no longer live in one special country. Does that mean this promise is no longer good? No, the apostle Paul repeated the promise in the New Testament, when God’s people lived in many different countries. Read it in Ephesians 6:1-3. This promise does not mean that the only people who die young are those who failed to honor their parents. Usually, those who honor parents and follow their advice will stay healthier and live longer than those who ignore what their parents tell them.
  • “God tells us to keep this commandment so that it will go well with us and we will enjoy life on the earth. The book of Proverbs shows us some ways this happens. Read Proverbs 1:8-9. A garland on your head or chain or necklace on your neck makes you more attractive. Does this mean you will be better-looking if you honor your parents? No, but you will be more attractive. When we honor our parents by paying attention to their instruction, we will have character qualities that make us more attractive to others and that please God. When our character is Christ like and we live to please God, things will go well with us and we will enjoy life.” [1]

Resources to Help Better Understand the Baptist Catechism

Church, I wanted to share with you three resources that I have found useful in my studying of the Baptist Catechism. While two of the three resources are based on the Westminster Shorter Catechism, you will see that the WSC and Baptist Catechism are very similar. A majority of the differences are in regards to the teaching on Baptism and the numbering of the catechism questions (the sequence of the doctrinal standards are the same). I have provided a link to amazon.com for you to view in more detail. If you would like to review a physical copy of one of these resources please see me as I will have them with me on Sundays.

Training Hearts, Teaching Minds Family Devotions Based on the Shorter Catechism by Starr Meade

This devotional book provides material and scripture passages to read and discuss from Monday through Saturday. It is a quick and easy read with practical insight and application perfect to incorporate into your family worship time.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism: For Study Classes by G. I. Williamson

This resource is a more in depth treatment of the catechism.  On average, four to six pages are dedicated to the explanation of individual or group of doctrinal standards. The author often includes simple illustrations to help articulate the concepts being taught, provides an abundance of scripture references, and discussion questions at the end of each section.

A Scriptural Exposition of the Baptist Catechism by Benjamin Beddome

Benjamin Beddome, a minister who lived from 1717-1795 wrote, A Scriptural Exposition of the Baptist Catechism which explains the Baptist Catechism by the way of further asking questions and providing the answers to those questions by directly quoting scripture.

Thoughts

  • “The Bible teaches children how to treat their parents. It tells them what they should not do as well as what they should do. As children are commanded to honor their parents, so they are forbidden to dishonor them. They must not show disrespect in any way. Unfortunately, we see all around us children of all ages who demonstrate disrespect for their parents. Such attitudes have become so ordinary that we hardly notice them when we see them. God considers disrespect toward parents as something very serious. God gave the Israelites twelve curses to pronounce as soon as they entered the Promised Land. These were curses for people who would do any of twelve very wrong things. The curses were for things like killing innocent people or worshiping idols. One of the curses was for anyone who treated his parents with disrespect.
  • Children are forbidden to dishonor their parents by attaching them physically, by cursing them, by refusing to obey them, or by mocking or making fun of them. Children also dishonor their parents when they refuse to learn from their teaching. Almost all parents want the best for their children. They teach them what they believe they should know. Children do not always see why their parent’s teaching is so important, yet they should believe that their parents are wiser than they are. They need to be diligent to learn what their parents teach them. Especially when children have Christian parents who will teach them the truth of God’s Word, they should work hard at learning what their parents want them to know.” [1]

Sermon: John 20: My Lord and My God

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.

Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me?
