Preparing for the Lord’s Day – February 21st

New Testament Sermon Text: John 17:20-26
Old Testament Reading: Psalm 133

Catechism – Instruction of God’s Word

Doctrinal Standards  BC #11 & 12

  • How does God execute His decrees?
  • God executes His decrees in the works of creation and providence.
  • What is the work of creation?
  • The work of creation is God’s making all things of nothing, by the Word of His power, in the space of six days, and all very good.

Memory Verse(s)

  • “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6, ESV).

Scripture

  • Study Passage: Genesis 1:1-25
  • Support Passages: Hebrews 11:1-6; Romans 1:20; Revelation 4:11; Colossians 1:16; Psalm 33:6-12
  • Bible Story: Genesis 1; the six days of creation.

Thoughts

  • God has always existed and He created everything out of nothing. When He created He created everything “very good” which means without sin. God is not the author of sin.
  • God carries out His plans or decrees by creating then taking care (providence) of what He created. Our God is not the god of the Deist who created and then withdrew from creation. The God of the Bible has created with a purpose and is always actively implementing that purpose.
  • The fact that God has personally created you and has given you a purpose provides meaning to our lives.
  • 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith Chapter 3: Of God’s Decree
  • God hath decreed in himself, from all eternity, by the most wise and holy counsel of his own will, freely and unchangeably, all things, whatsoever comes to pass; yet so as thereby is God neither the author of sin nor hath fellowship with any therein; nor is violence offered to the will of the creature, nor yet is the liberty or contingency of second causes taken away, but rather established; in which appears his wisdom in disposing all things, and power and faithfulness in accomplishing his decree.
    (Isaiah 46:10; Ephesians 1:11; Hebrews 6:17; Romans 9:15, 18; James 1:13; 1 John 1:5; Acts 4:27, 28; John 19:11; Numbers 23:19; Ephesians 1:3-5 )
  • Although God knoweth whatsoever may or can come to pass, upon all supposed conditions, yet hath he not decreed anything, because he foresaw it as future, or as that which would come to pass upon such conditions.
    (Acts 15:18; Romans 9:11, 13, 16, 18 )
  • By the decree of God, for the manifestation of his glory, some men and angels are predestinated, or foreordained to eternal life through Jesus Christ, to the praise of his glorious grace; others being left to act in their sin to their just condemnation, to the praise of his glorious justice.
    (1 Timothy 5:21; Matthew 25:34; Ephesians 1:5, 6; Romans 9:22, 23; Jude 4 )
  • These angels and men thus predestinated and foreordained, are particularly and unchangeably designed, and their number so certain and definite, that it cannot be either increased or diminished.
    (2 Timothy 2:19; John 13:18 )
  • Those of mankind that are predestinated to life, God, before the foundation of the world was laid, according to his eternal and immutable purpose, and the secret counsel and good pleasure of his will, hath chosen in Christ unto everlasting glory, out of his mere free grace and love, without any other thing in the creature as a condition or cause moving him thereunto.
    (Ephesians 1:4, 9, 11; Romans 8:30; 2 Timothy 1:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:9; Romans 9:13, 16;Ephesians 2:5, 12 )
  • As God hath appointed the elect unto glory, so he hath, by the eternal and most free purpose of his will, foreordained all the means thereunto; wherefore they who are elected, being fallen in Adam, are redeemed by Christ, are effectually called unto faith in Christ, by his Spirit working in due season, are justified, adopted, sanctified, and kept by his power through faith unto salvation; neither are any other redeemed by Christ, or effectually called, justified, adopted, sanctified, and saved, but the elect only.
    (1 Peter 1:2; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 Thessalonians 5:9, 10; Romans 8:30; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 Peter 1:5; John 10:26; John 17:9; John 6:64 )
  • The doctrine of the high mystery of predestination is to be handled with special prudence and care, that men attending the will of God revealed in his Word, and yielding obedience thereunto, may, from the certainty of their effectual vocation, be assured of their eternal election; so shall this doctrine afford matter of praise, reverence, and admiration of God, and of humility, diligence, and abundant consolation to all that sincerely obey the gospel.
    (1 Thessalonians 1:4, 5;2 Peter 1:10; Ephesians 1:6; Romans 11:33; Romans 11:5, 6, 20; Luke 10:20 )
  • 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith Chapter 4: Of Creation
  • In the beginning it pleased God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for the manifestation of the glory of his eternal power, wisdom, and goodness, to create or make the world, and all things therein, whether visible or invisible, in the space of six days, and all very good.
    ( John 1:2, 3; Hebrews 1:2; Job 26:13; Romans 1:20; Colossians 1:16; Genesis 1:31 )
  • After God had made all other creatures, he created man, male and female, with reasonable and immortal souls, rendering them fit unto that life to God for which they were created; being made after the image of God, in knowledge, righteousness, and true holiness; having the law of God written in their hearts, and power to fulfil it, and yet under a possibility of transgressing, being left to the liberty of their own will, which was subject to change.
    (Genesis 1:27; Genesis 2:7; Ecclesiastes 7:29; Genesis 1:26; Romans 2:14, 15; Genesis 3:6 )
  • Besides the law written in their hearts, they received a command not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, which whilst they kept, they were happy in their communion with God, and had dominion over the creatures.
    (Genesis 2:17; Genesis 1:26, 28 )

Discussion Questions

  • What does decree mean?
  • What does providence mean?
  • Contrast what the world teaches with what the bible teaches concerning origins.
  • The world and Bible explain the origin of life completely differently. Why is this? (Think worldview of God and man).
  • Which came first, God’s decrees or creation?
  • Why does it matter which one came first?
  • What does it mean that God created everything good? Why is this important?
  • If everything comes from something, where did God come from?
  • How can you use the fact that everything comes from something to prove a constant being (God) ?

Catechism – Instruction of God’s Word

Doctrinal Standard BC #10

  • What are the decrees of God?
  • The decrees of God are His eternal purpose, according to the counsel of His will, whereby for His own glory, He has fore-ordained whatsoever comes to pass

Memory Verse(s)

  • “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him”(Ephesians 1:3-4, ESV).

Scripture

  • Study Passage: Ephesians 1:3-14
  • Support Passages: Romans 8:26-39, 9:11-18; Acts 2:23, 4:24-28; John 6:44,65; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; I Peter 2:8; Genesis 18:19; Isaiah 5:1-7; Deuteronomy 7:6-11;
  • Bible Story: Genesis 37:1-28, 50:15-21

Thoughts

  • There are a few prerequisites to understanding the decrees of God. First, it is often unclear to see how God is going to use a tragedy or difficult time in someone’s life while it is taking place. Joseph saw nothing but complete evil and despair when his brothers sold him into slavery. It was only after the fact that Joseph saw the plan of God. Second, the dichotomy of God’s sovereignty and mans responsibility is something one will never completely understand. While we will never know in this lifetime how it all works the Bible strongly teaches that God is sovereign and has ordained things while still giving us the responsibility to act and response to the choices we face.
  • The fact that God has a purpose and is sovereign over all should fill us with humility and confidence that God will finish the work He has started in our lives.
    (Isaiah 46:10Ephesians 1:11Hebrews 6:17Romans 9:1518James 1:131 John 1:5Acts 4:2728John 19:11Numbers 23:19Ephesians 1:3-5 )

Discussion Questions

  • How does it make you feel that God is in control of everything?
  • How do you think Joseph felt when is brother sold him into slavery? Did he know what God was going to do?
  • If God is in control of everything why do bad things happen to good people?
  • What has God promised to those who love Him? (Romans 8:28-29).
  • What should be our attitude when difficult events happen in our lives?
  • Ephesians 1 says God chose us for salvation before the earth was even created. Why did he do that?
  • If God has chosen us for salvation and is in control of everything what should be our response?

Catechism – Instruction of God’s Word

Doctrinal Standards BC #8 & 9

  • Are there more gods than one?
  • There is but one only, the living and true God.
  • How many persons are there in the Godhead?
  • There are three persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one God, the same in essence, equal in power and glory.

Memory Verse(s)

  • “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20, ESV).

Scripture

  • Study Passage: Matthew 28:16-20
  • Support Passages: Deuteronomy 6:4-5; Deuteronomy 32:39; Isaiah 43:10; Ephesians 1:3–14; Acts 2:37-41, 8:14-17; Genesis 1:26, 3:22, 11:7; Ephesians 4:4-6;
  • Bible Story: Matthew 3

Thoughts

  • There is one God in three persons. Each person of the trinity is separate from the other two but fully and equally God.
  • The word trinity is not found in the Bible but the early church fathers developed the term to easily explain the concept.
  • There are many illustrations that try to explain but don’t completely and fully explain the trinity. Norman Geisler best explains it using the mathematical formula of 1 X 1 X 1 = 1.
  • Each person of the trinity has distinctive roles. This is not an exhaustive list but a simple example. The Father has predestined believers to salvation, Christ has redeemed believers through His death, and the Holy Spirit is our guarantee of salvation. Refer to (Ephesians 1:3–14).
  • 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith Chapter 2: Of God and of the Holy Trinity.
  • The Lord our God is but one only living and true God; whose subsistence is in and of himself, infinite in being and perfection; whose essence cannot be comprehended by any but himself; a most pure spirit, invisible, without body, parts, or passions, who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; who is immutable, immense, eternal, incomprehensible, almighty, every way infinite, most holy, most wise, most free, most absolute; working all things according to the counsel of his own immutable and most righteous will for his own glory; most loving, gracious, merciful, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin; the rewarder of them that diligently seek him, and withal most just and terrible in his judgments, hating all sin, and who will by no means clear the guilty.
    (1 Corinthians 8:4, 6; Deuteronomy 6:4; Jeremiah 10:10; Isaiah 48:12; Exodus 3:14; John 4:24; 1 Timothy 1:17; Deuteronomy 4:15, 16; Malachi 3:6; 1 Kings 8:27; Jeremiah 23:23; Psalms 90:2; Genesis 17:1; Isaiah 6:3; Psalms 115:3; Isaiah 46:10; Proverbs 16:4; Romans 11:36; Exodus 34:6, 7; Hebrews 11:6;Nehemiah 9:32, 33; Psalms 5:5, 6; Exodus 34:7; Nahum 1:2, 3 )
  • God, having all life, glory, goodness, blessedness, in and of himself, is alone in and unto himself all-sufficient, not standing in need of any creature which he hath made, nor deriving any glory from them, but only manifesting his own glory in, by, unto, and upon them; he is the alone fountain of all being, of whom, through whom, and to whom are all things, and he hath most sovereign dominion over all creatures, to do by them, for them, or upon them, whatsoever himself pleaseth; in his sight all things are open and manifest, his knowledge is infinite, infallible, and independent upon the creature, so as nothing is to him contingent or uncertain; he is most holy in all his counsels, in all his works, and in all his commands; to him is due from angels and men, whatsoever worship, service, or obedience, as creatures they owe unto the Creator, and whatever he is further pleased to require of them.
    (John 5:26; Psalms 148:13; Psalms 119:68; Job 22:2, 3; Romans 11:34-36; Daniel 4:25, 34, 35; Hebrews 4:13; Ezekiel 11:5; Acts 15:18; Psalms 145:17;Revelation 5:12-14 )
  • 3. In this divine and infinite Being there are three subsistences, the Father, the Word or Son, and Holy Spirit, of one substance, power, and eternity, each having the whole divine essence, yet the essence undivided: the Father is of none, neither begotten nor proceeding; the Son is eternally begotten of the Father; the Holy Spirit proceeding from the Father and the Son; all infinite, without beginning, therefore but one God, who is not to be divided in nature and being, but distinguished by several peculiar relative properties and personal relations; which doctrine of the Trinity is the foundation of all our communion with God, and comfortable dependence on him.
    ( 1 John 5:7; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Exodus 3:14; John 14:11; 1 Corinthians 8:6; John 1:14,18; John 15:26; Galatians 4:6 )

Discussion Questions

  • What is the trinity?
  • How does the baptism of Jesus display the trinity?
  • What is a good illustration to explain the trinity?
  • Is one part of the trinity more powerful then another?
  • How do the different persons of the trinity work together for our good?

  • “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24, ESV).

Scripture

  • Study Passage: John 4:1-26, 38-42; Psalm 94, 139
  • Support Passages: I Timothy 1:15-17, 6:13-16; Isaiah 40:12-31, 45:5-25 Psalm 90:1-6; I Kings 8:27; Job 11:7-9; Romans 11:33-36; Psalm 147:4-5; (Holy)Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 15:4 (Just) Isaiah 30:18; Job 34:12; Revelation 16:7; Psalm: 82; Psalm 103:6; 146:6-9 (Good) Psalm 145:8-9, 103:8
  • Bible Story: I Kings 18:21-40; John 10:1-18

Thoughts

  • God is a spirit. He is not a material being nor is not confined to one location. We are called to worship God in spirit. The worship of God the Father must be done with the understanding that His Spirit dwells within and that we are accepted by the Father because of the death of Christ for the punishment of our sins. Furthermore, God is Spirit not confined to a single place therefore we are able to worship God at any location that we may be. Last, God is a spirit that is unseen therefore our worship is out of faith of the unseen.
  • We are to worship God in truth. Worshiping God in truth starts with the understanding Jesus is the only way to the Father. If we are to worship God in truth it must be done through the redeeming power of Christ blood. We must also worship God in accordance to His everlasting attributes and in the manner by which he prescribed in His commands.
  • The name God uses to describe himself is “I am who I am.” This name communicates that He always has and always will be present. The Expositor’s commentary explains it as, “I am truly He who exists and who will be dynamically present then and there in the situation to which I am sending you.” Moses had the confidence that God would not leave Him. The Holy Spirit is evidence in our own lives that God will never leave us because of what Christ did on the cross for our sins.
  • God is omnipresent and contains complete wisdom and knowledge of all that is created. We have the comfort that the God who dwells in us will guide us and help form us into the image of His Son Christ Jesus.
  • 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith Chapter 2: Of God and of the Holy Trinity

Discussion Questions

  • What does it mean that God is a Spirit?
  • If God is a Spirit why is He described as having physical features of humans (eyes, hand, etc)?
  • Is God the only spirit?
  • If God is a spirit then why did Jesus come as a man?
  • Why should we be careful to only think of Jesus as a physical being?
  • What does it mean to worship God in truth?
  • What can we learn about God from His attributes?
  • Can God’s attribute’s conflict with one another?
  • Psalms 139 says that God knows everything about us so why do we think we can hide sins from God?

Catechism – Instruction of God’s Word

Doctrinal Standards BC #5 & 6

  • May all men make use of the Scriptures?
  • All men are not only permitted, but commanded and exhorted, to read, hear, and understand the Scriptures.)
  • What do the Scriptures principally teach?
  • The Scriptures principally teach what man is to believe concerning God and what duty God requires of man.

Memory Verse(s)

  • “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16, ESV).

Scripture

  • Study Passage: 2 Timothy 3:14-17
  • Support Passages: Matthew 22:23-46; John 5:30-47, 15:3, 17:17, 18:37; 2 Peter 1:16-21; I John 1:1-3
  • Bible Story: Acts 8:26-39

Thoughts

  • It is through the scriptures that God has spoken and revealed His will to mankind. It is our responsibility, through the help of the Holy Spirit, to study and understand the scriptures. The Bible was given by God to reveal truths about Him that could not be concluded from studying creation. Furthermore, scripture was given to make us wise for salvation, instruct us on how to live a life pleasing to God, correct our misunderstandings about mankind and God, and to rebuke us of our sinful actions.
  • What does God require of man? God requires man to realize that his greatest efforts of righteousness are like dirty rags before God. Man must trust in Jesus Christ’s death as a substitute for the punishment He deserves for his sins. Once the righteousness of Christ is placed on man, man must walk in obedience to the commands of the Lord with the help of the Holy Spirit.
  • I. Williamson in his book “The Westminster Shorter Catechesim” mentions that catechism questions 4-38 teaches what we must believe about God while questions 39-107 teach what God requires of man.

  • 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith Chapter 1: Of The Holy Scriptures
  • The Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience, although the light of nature, and the works of creation and providence do so far manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, as to leave men inexcusable; yet are they not sufficient to give that knowledge of God and his will which is necessary unto salvation. Therefore it pleased the Lord at sundry times and in divers manners to reveal himself, and to declare that his will unto his church; and afterward for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more sure establishment and comfort of the church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan, and of the world, to commit the same wholly unto writing; which maketh the Holy Scriptures to be most necessary, those former ways of God’s revealing his will unto his people being now ceased.

2 Timothy 3:15-17Isaiah 8:20Luke 16:2931Ephesians 2:20Romans 1:19-21Romans 2:14,15Psalms 19:1-3Hebrews 1:1Proverbs 22:19-21;Romans 15:42 Peter 1:19,20 )

  • Under the name of Holy Scripture, or the Word of God written, are now contained all the books of the Old and New Testaments, which are these:
  • Of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, I Samuel, II Samuel, I Kings, II Kings, I Chronicles, II Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, The Song of Solomen, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations,Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, MalachiOf the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, The Acts of the Apostles, Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, I Corinthians, II Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, I Thessalonians, II Thessalonians, I Timothy, II Timothy, To Titus, To Philemon, The Epistle to the Hebrews, Epistle of James, The first and second Epistles of Peter, The first, second, and third Epistles of John, The Epistle of Jude, The Revelation
  • All of which are given by the inspiration of God, to be the rule of faith and life.(2 Timothy 3:16)
  • The books commonly called Apocrypha, not being of divine inspiration, are no part of the canon or rule of the Scripture, and, therefore, are of no authority to the church of God, nor to be any otherwise approved or made use of than other human writings. (Luke 24:2744Romans 3:2 )
  • The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed, dependeth not upon the testimony of any man or church, but wholly upon God (who is truth itself), the author thereof; therefore it is to be received because it is the Word of God. (2 Peter 1:19-212 Timothy 3:162 Thessalonians 2:131 John 5:9 )
  • We may be moved and induced by the testimony of the church of God to an high and reverent esteem of the Holy Scriptures; and the heavenliness of the matter, the efficacy of the doctrine, and the majesty of the style, the consent of all the parts, the scope of the whole (which is to give all glory to God), the full discovery it makes of the only way of man’s salvation, and many other incomparable excellencies, and entire perfections thereof, are arguments whereby it doth abundantly evidence itself to be the Word of God; yet notwithstanding, our full persuasion and assurance of the infallible truth, and divine authority thereof, is from the inward work of the Holy Spirit bearing witness by and with the Word in our hearts.
    John 16:13,141 Corinthians 2:10-121 John 2:2027)
  • The whole counsel of God concerning all things necessary for his own glory, man’s salvation, faith and life, is either expressly set down or necessarily contained in the Holy Scripture: unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelation of the Spirit, or traditions of men. Nevertheless, we acknowledge the inward illumination of the Spirit of God to be necessary for the saving understanding of such things as are revealed in the Word, and that there are some circumstances concerning the worship of God, and government of the church, common to human actions and societies, which are to be ordered by the light of nature and Christian prudence, according to the general rules of the Word, which are always to be observed.
    2 Timothy 3:15-17Galatians 1:8,9John 6:451 Corinthians 2:9-121 Corinthians 11:13141 Corinthians 14:26,40)
  • All things in Scripture are not alike plain in themselves, nor alike clear unto all; yet those things which are necessary to be known, believed and observed for salvation, are so clearly propounded and opened in some place of Scripture or other, that not only the learned, but the unlearned, in a due use of ordinary means, may attain to a sufficient understanding of them.
    2 Peter 3:16Psalms 19:7Psalms 119:130)
  • The Old Testament in Hebrew (which was the native language of the people of God of old), and the New Testament in Greek (which at the time of the writing of it was most generally known to the nations), being immediately inspired by God, and by his singular care and providence kept pure in all ages, are therefore authentic; so as in all controversies of religion, the church is finally to appeal to them. But because these original tongues are not known to all the people of God, who have a right unto, and interest in the Scriptures, and are commanded in the fear of God to read and search them, therefore they are to be translated into the vulgar language of every nation unto which they come, that the Word of God dwelling plentifully in all, they may worship him in an acceptable manner, and through patience and comfort of the Scriptures may have hope.
    Romans 3:2Isaiah 8:20Acts 15:15John 5:391 Corinthians 14:6911122428Colossians 3:16 )
  • The infallible rule of interpretation of Scripture is the Scripture itself; and therefore when there is a question about the true and full sense of any Scripture (which is not manifold, but one), it must be searched by other places that speak more clearly.
    2 Peter 1:2021Acts 15:1516)
  • The supreme judge, by which all controversies of religion are to be determined, and all decrees of councils, opinions of ancient writers, doctrines of men, and private spirits, are to be examined, and in whose sentence we are to rest, can be no other but the Holy Scripture delivered by the Spirit, into which Scripture so delivered, our faith is finally resolved.
    Matthew 22:293132Ephesians 2:20Acts 28:23)

Discussion Questions

  • Why must we study scripture?
  • What would be the result of misunderstanding the truths about God or mankind?
  • Are there any other sources of truth about God or mankind?
  • Does God accept ignorance as a reasonable excuse for not knowing scripture?
  • How does the Bible apply to everyday life?
  • What does God require of man?

Catechism – Instruction of God’s Word

Doctrinal Standard BC #4

  • What is the Word of God?
  • The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, being given by divine inspiration, are the Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

Memory Verse(s)

  • “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether” (Psalm 19:7-9, ESV).

Scripture

  • Study Passage: Psalm 19
  • Support Passages: Romans 1:18-32; I Corinthians 2; Hebrews 1:1-3; John 1:14
  • Bible Story: Exodus 32:1-21; Exodus 24:4, 7-8, 12

Thoughts

  • There are two types of revelation: general and special revelation. General revelation is what we can learn about God from the things we can see. For example, we know that God is orderly because we see His creation is full of order. Special revelation is information about God found only in the scriptures. Scripture is the only place that informs us that God has sent His Son to be the substitute for our sins.
  • The Bible is the only source of the saving knowledge of God therefore we must study it and follow its commands. Jesus said that if we love the Father we will keep His commands. We study and obey not to gain merit with God but to shows our love and respect for God. Our Father’s commands are not intended to be burdensome but an abundant life freed from sin.

    2 Timothy 3:16)

Discussion Questions

  • Why is obeying God’s commands considered a way of glorifying Him?
  • Why is obeying God’s commands considered an enjoyable thing?
  • Why did God give us commands on what to do and what not to do?
  • Compare how obeying God’s commands is like obeying your parent’s commands.
  • What does obeying God reveal about our relationship with Him?
  • Jesus says his commands are not burdensome. Do you find this true? Explain.

Catechism – Instruction of God’s Word

Doctrinal Standards BC #1-3

  • Who is the first and best of beings?
  • God is the first and best of beings.
  • Should everyone believe there is a God?
  • Everyone should believe there is a God; and it is their great sin and folly who do not.
  • How do we know there is a God?
  • The light of nature in man, and the works of God, plainly declare that there is a God; but His Word and Spirit only, do effectually reveal Him unto us for our salvation.

Memory Verse(s)

  • “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31, ESV).

Scripture

  • Bible Story: Daniel 4:28-37

Thoughts

  • • 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith Chapter 2: Of God and of the Holy Trinity.
    • 1. The Lord our God is but one only living and true God; whose subsistence is in and of himself, infinite in being and perfection; whose essence cannot be comprehended by any but himself; a most pure spirit, invisible, without body, parts, or passions, who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; who is immutable, immense, eternal, incomprehensible, almighty, every way infinite, most holy, most wise, most free, most absolute; working all things according to the counsel of his own immutable and most righteous will for his own glory; most loving, gracious, merciful, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin; the rewarder of them that diligently seek him, and withal most just and terrible in his judgments, hating all sin, and who will by no means clear the guilty.
( 1 Corinthians 8:4, 6; Deuteronomy 6:4; Jeremiah 10:10; Isaiah 48:12; Exodus 3:14; John 4:24; 1 Timothy 1:17; Deuteronomy 4:15, 16; Malachi 3:6; 1 Kings 8:27; Jeremiah 23:23; Psalms 90:2; Genesis 17:1; Isaiah 6:3; Psalms 115:3; Isaiah 46:10; Proverbs 16:4; Romans 11:36; Exodus 34:6, 7; Hebrews 11:6;Nehemiah 9:32, 33; Psalms 5:5, 6; Exodus 34:7; Nahum 1:2, 3 )• 2. God, having all life, glory, goodness, blessedness, in and of himself, is alone in and unto himself all-sufficient, not standing in need of any creature which he hath made, nor deriving any glory from them, but only manifesting his own glory in, by, unto, and upon them; he is the alone fountain of all being, of whom, through whom, and to whom are all things, and he hath most sovereign dominion over all creatures, to do by them, for them, or upon them, whatsoever himself pleaseth; in his sight all things are open and manifest, his knowledge is infinite, infallible, and independent upon the creature, so as nothing is to him contingent or uncertain; he is most holy in all his counsels, in all his works, and in all his commands; to him is due from angels and men, whatsoever worship, service, or obedience, as creatures they owe unto the Creator, and whatever he is further pleased to require of them.
    ( John 5:26; Psalms 148:13; Psalms 119:68; Job 22:2, 3; Romans 11:34-36; Daniel 4:25, 34, 35; Hebrews 4:13; Ezekiel 11:5; Acts 15:18; Psalms 145:17;Revelation 5:12-14 )

  • How did Nebuchadnezzar eventually glorify God?
  • How can you glorify God in your daily life?
  • Who glorifies God more: a pastor or a mechanic? Explain
  • What does it mean to be Christ-centered?
  • Nebuchadnezzar was not Christ (God) centered. What was at the center of his life?
  • What are some things that might take the place of Christ as the center of someone’s life?
  • The Bible teaches that believers are the temple of God in which Christ dwells. How does this help our ability to be Christ centered?

  • What does the conclusion of the Lord’s Prayer teach us?
    A. The conclusion of the Lord’s Prayer, which is, “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever, Amen,” teaches us to take our encouragement in prayer from God only, and in our prayers to praise Him, ascribing kingdom, power, and glory to Him; and in testimony of our desire, and assurance to be heard, we say, AMEN.

Memory Verse(s)
