About Emmaus
Emmaus is a Reformed Baptist church in Hemet, California. We are a community of Christ followers who love God, love one another, and serve the church, community, and nations, for the glory of God and for our joy.
Our hope is that you will make Emmaus your home and that you will begin to grow with us as we study the scriptures and, through the empowering of the Holy Spirit, live in a way that honors our great King.

Membership
Interested in becoming a member? Please join us for a four-week study in which we will make a case from the scriptures for local church membership and introduce the ministries, government, doctrines, and distinctive's of Emmaus Reformed Baptist Church.
Gospel Community Groups
Gospel Community Groups are small group Bible studies. They are designed to provide an opportunity for the members of Emmaus to build deeper relationships with one another. Groups meet throughout the week to discuss the sermons from the previous Sunday, to share life, and to pray.

Emmaus Essentials
Emmaus Essentials classes are currently offered online Sundays at 9AM. It is through our Emmaus Essentials (Sunday School) that we hope to experience an in depth study of the scriptures and Christian theology. These classes focus on the study of systematic theology, biblical theology, church history, and other topics practical to Christian living.

Multi-Generational Church Ministry
At Emmaus we believe that God has given parents, especially fathers the authority and responsibility to train and instruct children up in the Lord. In addition, we believe that God has ordained the gathering of all generations, young to old, to worship Him together in one place and at one time. Therefore, each and every Sunday our children worship the Lord alongside their parents and other members of God’s family.

Discussion Questions For At Home Or In Gospel Community Groups
- When we say that someone holds an “office”, what do we mean?
- Where do the offices of prophet, priest, and king first appear in the scriptures, generally speaking?
- What do prophets, priests, and kings do, respectively? Why are they needed?
- Under the Old Covenant, there were many prophets, priests, and kings. Compare these to Christ. What is similar? What is unique about Christ as our great prophet, priest, and king?
- What do these offices teach us about what Christ has done for us? Baptist Catechism 27-29 will help us with this question.

- What is the central concern of the collection of laws in Exodus 22:28-23:19?
- It is true that Old Covenant Israel was in a special and unique covenantal relationship with YHWH. But it is also true that all people and all nations are in covenant with YHWH. How so? Discuss the implications of this.
- Who is in a special covenantal relationship with YHWH today? Discuss how this group has a special obligation to worship and serve the LORD in this world? Please see Romans 9:1–8 and 1 Peter 2:9–12 for help with this question.

- All nations are called to uphold justice by the principle of life for life, eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. Old Covenant Israel was no different in this regard. Discuss from Exodus 21:12–22:20.
- Some extreme forms of immorality were punishable by death in Old Covenant Israel. Why was this true for them, whereas it ought not to be so in common nations?
- Why was imprisonment not mentioned as a punishment for crimes in Israel’s civil laws? Contrast this with our criminal justice system.
- Discuss the justice of Israel’s civil laws and contrast them with the injustice that you see in our own society.
- What did Christ mean when he said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also…” (Matthew 5:38–42, ESV)

- In what ways were the civil laws of Old Covenant Israel unique to them (and are not for us)?
- The civil laws of Israel are similar to our civil laws in this: they served to restrain evil and promote justice. Like ours, they did not aim to eradicate sin. God tolerated much (divorce, polygamy, etc.). Not every sin (violation of God’s moral law) was a crime. Why is this important to understand?
- How was the slavery regulated in Exodus 21 different from the slavery that existed in this country not long ago?
- Laws concerning the just treatment of the weak and vulnerable in society are presented first and last in this collection of case laws. What message does that send?
- Discuss potential applications of this text politically, ecclesiastically, and personally.

- Why did Israel request that Moses mediate? How does this prefigure Christ?
- Why did God give Israel preliminary instructions for worship when instructions for the construction of the tabernacle were forthcoming?
- What did animal sacrifices communicate to the worshipper concerning sin, its consequences, and the coming Savior?
- Moses and the Old Covenant of which he was mediator could not cleanse the worshipper really and truly. Only faith in Christ the mediator of the New Covenant could do that. See especially Hebrews 9 and 10. Discuss.
