Sermon manuscript available at emmausrbc.org

  • What was the purpose of the plagues according to the text?
  • Why is it significant that water, earth and sky were struck?
  • What can we learn from Pharaoh about the sin of unbelief?
  • Why were the magicians able to reproduce the introductory sign and the first two plagues, but not the third, leading them to admit, “this is the finger of God”?
  • This was an utterly unique event in the history of redemption, but what can we learn for it concerning God’s judgements?

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AT HOME OR IN GOSPEL COMMUNITY GROUPS

  • How does the Exodus story demonstrate that God is able to keep his people while simultaneously judging the wicked thought they are interspersed amongst them? How does the story of the flood and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah do the same?
  • Our situation does not mirror Israel’s situation in the promised land, rather it mirrors Israel’s situation in Egyptian captivity and in the wilderness. Why? Discuss the significance of this.
  • How does this apply to us as we see wickedness increasing all around?

  • How do the genealogies of Genesis, Exodus (and the rest of the Pentateuch) relate to the first promise of the gospel found in Genesis 3:15?
  • What does the genealogy of Exodus 6 teach us about Moses and Aaron?
  • Why are “villains” like Korah, Nadab, and Abihu highlighted?
  • Why might this genealogy conclude with Phinehas?
  • They were priests. What impact does this fact have upon the Exodus story? In other words, what theme does this emphasize?
  • How is Jesus present in this genealogy?
  • How might this passage apply to us today?

  • The LORD was merciful, kind, and patient with Moses in this moment. How so? How has God been patient with you?
  • How does God reassure Moses that he will keep his promises in this passage? How does he do the same for us today?
  • Why is it important for us to know about the covenants that God has made with man throughout history?

  • How are God’s people helped by the advanced notice that life will not always be easy for them (Pharaoh’s heart would be hard, and Christ’s disciples will suffer tribulations)?
  • What  can we learn from Moses regarding what to do in the midst of discouragement and despair?
  • How did God help Moses in the midst of his despair? What did he remind him of?

  • Is the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart a minor or major theme in the Exodus story? Discuss.
  • Why did God harden Pharaoh’s heart?
  • Was it wrong for God to harden Pharaoh’s heart?
  • Was Pharaoh unique? In other words, are the hearts of other men off limits to God, or is he sovereign over the hearts of all men?
  • How can God be sovereign over the hearts of all men, and yet men still be free and accountable to God?
  • Why the process? Why the process of the Exodus, human history, the story of your own life? Why election and reprobation? What is it for according to the scriptures? Hint: Exodus 9:16; Romans 9:22.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AT HOME OR IN GOSPEL COMMUNITY GROUPS

Sermon manuscript available at emmausrbc.org

  • Discuss how the deliverance that God worked for Israel is a picture of the greater act of deliverance worked by Christ. What did Christ redeem us from and to? How has Christ plundered Satan’s kingdom?
  • What are signs for? Discuss the signs that God worked through Moses. Discuss the signs that God worked through Christ. What did they signify?
  • Moses was a reluctant deliverer. Why did Moses emphasize this in his writings?
  • God uses common things to accomplish his purposes. He can use you and me, therefore. Discuss.

  • Put yourself in Moses’ place. What would you be concerned about if God were calling you to accomplish this mission?
  • Why should we consider it a good thing that Moses’ initial reply to God’s call was, “who am I?” Why didn’t God seek to build Moses up to remove his doubts? What did God emphasize instead to encourage Moses? (See v. 12)
  • Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob used the name Yahweh to refer to God. Why does God say in Exodus 6:3 that the LORD did not make himself known to them by this name? What is the meaning of that?
  • What did God reveal to Moses concerning the significance of the name Yahweh? In other words, what meaning did God attach to that name?
  • What did God mean when he referred to himself as the “I AM”?
  • What effect should the name Yahweh have upon the people of God? What should it make us think, feel, and do?
