  • What does the first commandment forbid? What does it require?
  • What are sins of omission? What are sins of commission? And how do we violate the first commandment in both of these ways?
  • Violations of the first commandment are rather easy to see when they take the form of idolatry. But it is possible, and even common, to break the first commandment in the heart. How so?
  • How is God’s law useful to the Christian?
  • What needs to change in your life as it pertains to the first commandment?

  • What difference does it make if people view the scriptures in general, and God’s law in particular, as having their origin in man rather than God?
  • Why are the Ten Commandments given to Israel first? Why did God speak these laws to Israel directly? Why did he write this with his own hand?
  • The Old Covenant was a covenant of works substantially, but God’s grace was certainly present. How so? Discuss.
  • What was God doing with Israel when he gave them the Ten Commandments (and all of the other laws)?
  • Why was Israel especially obligated to keep God’s law?
  • How does this passage apply to us under the New Covenant?

  • How are the covenants that God has made with man similar to the covenants that we humans make with each other? How are they different?
  • What were the terms of the covenant that God entered into with Israel?
  • Was the Mosaic Covenant a covenant of works or a covenant grace?
  • Does this mean that the saving grace of God was not available to men in those days? Discuss.
  • Why did God enter into this covenant with Israel? What was the purpose?

  • Chapter 19 of our confession divides the law of Moses up into three categories: moral, civil, and ceremonial. Can you define these terms (see 2LCF 19 for help)? How are these categories helpful in understanding the law of Moses and its application to the New Covenant people of God?
  • What errors could result from failing to see the civil (judicial) and ceremonial laws of Moses as being unique to Israel?
  • You may be innocent as it pertains to the civil laws of this land, but no man is innocent as it pertains to God’s moral law. Discuss.
  • On the last day all men will stand, not before Moses, but Christ. He will judge according to the moral law. We will either have him as Savior or Judge. We had better have him as Savior. Discuss.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AT HOME OR IN GOSPEL COMMUNITY GROUPS

Sermon manuscript available at emmausrbc.org

  • How will contemplation of and appreciation for the marvelous victory that Christ has accomplished for us in his life, death, burial, and resurrection help us to witness to others regarding the good news?
  • How will contemplation of the judgment that awaits all who are not in Christ motivate us to witness?
  • Discuss the significance of Jethro’s response? Consider that he was a gentile. Consider what he confessed to knowing. Consider his worship, and also the meal that he ate before God and with Israel. What is the significance of these things?
  • Why have I said that the goal of witnessing is worship?

  • Some imagine that spiritual warfare is mystical, involving dreams and visions and the like. In reality, it is very practical. Consider the armor of God listed in Ephesians 6 and discuss the practical ways in which that armor is to be taken up, put on, and wielded day by day.
  • What is prayer? Why is it imperative that we clothe ourselves with the armor of God and fight the spiritual battle in prayer? Why must prayer be persistent and faithful?
  • How do the words, “The LORD is my banner” of Exodus 17:15 find their fulfillment in Jesus (Joshua) the Christ? Why must we run to him and be found in him by faith? What is the victory that he has won?

  • What does it mean to walk by sight? What does it mean to walk by faith? Does walking by faith require us to ignore what we see with our natural eyes?
  • How might a Christian learn to be driven, not by their passions and cravings, but by the Word of God and the Spirit of God? How might a Christian practice this way of life so as to become mature in it?

How might a Christian learn to find their satisfaction in God and in Christ? Is this something that can be learned, is it a gift that must be given, or is it both?

  • Contentment does not equal complacency. Discuss.
  • Why is thoughtful and faithful Sabbath observance crucial for Christian sojourners?
