Discussion Questions And Lesson Outline For Sermon On Baptist Catechism 43

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: BAPTIST CATECHISM 43

  • Who is our catechism talking about when it speaks of “the wicked”?
  • What is meant by “the Day of Judgment”? When will this day be? What will happen on that day?
  • Who will be raised bodily on the last day?
  • What is hell?
  • Must we say that hell is everlasting? What would you say to someone who claims that eternal punishment is unjust?
  • What has Christ saved us to? What has Christ saved us from?
  • How should this teaching affect how we think and the things we say and do?

  • Who is our catechism talking about when it speaks of “the wicked”? Though it is true that those who have faith in Christ were born in sin and still struggle with sin, why must they not be called “the wicked”? What are believers called instead? Why is this so?
  • What is meant by “at death”? What moment does this refer to?
  • What is hell?
  • To review: where will the souls of believers go at death? Where will their bodies go? And now I ask, where will the souls of the wicked go at death? Where will their bodies go? Is this the final state for believers? Do you think it is the final state for the wicked? Question 43 will answer this question. But is there anything in answer 42 that gives us a hint?
  • Question 42 seems like bad news (and it is for the wicked). How is it good news for the believer? Stated differently, how does question 42 help us to better understand and appreciate the good news of Jesus Christ?
  • What should this teaching motivate us to do?

  • If the Levitical priests mediated between God and man under the Old Covenant, why does 1 Timothy 2:5 say, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus…”?
  • Why must we say that the priesthood of Old was good? What were its limitations?
  • How did the priests of Old point forward to Christ’s greater work of mediation when they ministered, 1) at the altar of sacrifice, 2) at the altar of incense, and 3) in the Holy of Holies once per year?
  • Why did Christ come in the order of Melchizedek, and not in the line of Levi and Aaron? See Hebrews 7.
  • How might you apply this teaching to your life in thought, word, and deed?

  • When will the resurrection happen? What is it?
  • What is meant by, “raised up in glory”? If our souls go into the presence of God when we die, what will be raised up? What is meant by glory?
  • Believers will be “openly acknowledged…” By whom? As what? They will also be “openly… acquitted.” What does acquitted mean? Acquitted by whom? What is meant by “openly”? What do these two things – acquitted and acknowledged –  have to do with adoption (BC 35, 37) and justification (BC 35, 36)?
  • When is the Day of Judgement in relation to the day of resurrection?
  • What does it mean to be perfectly blessed? What does the word perfectly have to do with the phrase, “in soul and body”? What (or better yet, who) will make us perfectly blessed?
  • What does it mean to enjoy God for all eternity? Can we enjoy him now? How will our enjoyment of God be made full (perfect, complete) in eternity?

  • What metals were used in the courtyard of the tabernacle? What was placed within the courtyard? Who was allowed to assemble there?
  • If the holy of holies signified the heavenly throneroom of God, and the holy place signified the visible heavens, what part of God’s creation did the courtyard signify?
  • What was the good news that the courtyard communicated?
  •  What was the good news that the altar of burnt offering communicated?
  • What was the good news that the bronze laver communicated?
  • In the courtyard, there was water and blood. What does this have to do with Christ and the way that he entered the heavenly holy of holies for us? What does this say to us about the way to the Father?

  • Try to describe the design of the tabernacle, its parts, and furniture.
  • How was Israel’s three-parted tabernacle a miniature replica of the original earthly creation? How was Israel’s three-parted tabernacle a miniature replica of the entire creation (heaven and earth)?
  • There was no physical tabernacle from Adam to Moses. What was the good news communicated through the tabernacle when it was given to Israel in the days of Moses? Think in terms of kingdom, temple, and rest.
  • What, in particular, was the message proclaimed by the ark of the covenant, table of showbread, lampstand, and altar of incense?
  • How do these features of the tabernacle help us to better appreciate who Jesus Christ was and what he did for us on the cross to earn our redemption?

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AT HOME OR IN GOSPEL COMMUNITY GROUPS

Sermon manuscript available at emmausrbc.org

  • Have you ever wrestled with the questions that Asaph wrestled with in Psalm 73:2-14?
  • According to Psalm 73, how should we interpret the prosperity of the wicked?
  • How should we interpret the sufferings of the righteous?
  • How would going up to the Old Covenant temple help someone wrestling with these questions to regain a proper (eternal) perspective?  What is the New Covenant parallel to this?
  • “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:26, ESV). Discuss.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION AT HOME OR IN GOSPEL COMMUNITY GROUPS

Sermon manuscript available at emmausrbc.org

  • What was the purpose of the tabernacle for Old Covenant Isarel? What were they to do there, and what did it communicate to them, and to the world, about what God was doing in and through them? In other words, how did the tabernacle proclaim the gospel?
  • Trace the theme of tabernacle/temple from Genesis 2 through to the end of Revelation 22. Why is it important to trace this theme and to note its development?  Stated differently, what might we miss if we focus too narrowly on the details of the tabernacle and temple that Israel built?
  • The garden-temple of Eden was not made of wood, metal, cloth, or stone. It was God dwelling in with his people in the world he had made. And so too, the temple of the new heavens and earth will be like this (Revelation 21). There will be no temple structure. All will be temple. Firstly, why then did God command Israel to build a structure? And secondly, does this help you to understand why the is no temple structure under the New Covenant, rather, the church is the temple of the Holy Spirit?
  • If the church is the temple of the Holy Spirit now, what are the implications concerning the nature, purpose, and mission of the church?
