A Child’s Call to Conversion: Faith as a Christian Mark

I came across this article, “A Child’s Call to Conversion: Faith as a Christian Mark” by Tedd Tripp and thought it complements what Joe discussed a couple Sundays ago regarding a child’s confession of faith.

“The clear desire of all Christian parents is the spiritual well-being of their children. We want our children to be saved, to be part of the company of the redeemed. We yearn for the blessing of God’s covenant grace to be on our children.

While we recognize God’s sovereignty in salvation, this longing to see one generation follow another in knowing God motivates the training and instruction of our children. Psalm 78 captures it: “Things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders he has done. He established a testimony … which he commanded our fathers to teach their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and teach to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commands” (vv. 3–6). Because we long for our children to know the grace we have known, we declare God’s mighty acts to the next generation (Ps. 145). We teach God’s ways so that our sons and our son’s sons will follow God (Deut. 6).

We want our children to have faith in God. But what does it mean to have saving faith? Starting with Martin Luther and further explicated by Philip Melanchthon and others who followed them, Reformed theology has traditionally used a threefold definition of faith as notitia (knowledge),assensus (assent), and fiducia (trust). Our major confessions of faith show this understanding. The Westminster Confession of Faith 14.2 maintains that saving faith joins believing in God’s Word, accepting Christ’s claims, and “receiving and resting on Christ alone” for all that salvation provides.

The answer to question 21 of the Heidelberg Catechism — “What is saving faith?” — provides perhaps the clearest description of saving faith found in any confession: “True faith is not only sure knowledge, whereby I hold for truth all that God has revealed to us in His Word, but also firm confidence which the Holy Spirit works in my heart by the gospel, that not only to others, but to me also, remission of sins, everlasting righteousness and salvation are freely given by God, merely of grace, only for the sake of Christ’s merits.”

As a parent who desires his children to exercise saving faith, I am concerned with all three aspects of saving faith. Therefore, my shepherding must intentionally promote notitia, assensus, andfiducia.

Notitia. Our English word notice comes from this Latin word. It conveys the basic informational content of the Christian faith. Our children must understand the basic content of the gospel. That’s one of the reasons the practice of family worship is so essential. There is truth to be known. It is not possible to exercise faith without content. “How are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?” (Rom. 10:14).

We know that knowledge does not save, but faith must act on knowledge. Faith is not a “blind leap in the dark.” If our children are to put their faith in Jesus Christ, we must provide reasons for faith. They cannot trust in Jesus Christ without knowing truth about Him. There is a corpus of knowledge about themselves, God, and God’s created order that they must know and in some sense understand if they are to be children of faith. They can believe only in that which they know.

This was the burden that drove Paul’s concern for the communication of truth: “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you — unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures” (1 Cor. 15:1–4, emphasis added).

Without knowledge, faith is not possible since we must know something of the One in whom we are to believe. It is not enough to merely be sincere. Correct knowledge matters, yet knowledge is not faith.

Assensus. The common English word assent comes from this Latin term. To assent means to believe something to be true. It is possible to know (notitia) something and not personally believe it (assensus). Our children must both understand the content of the gospel and believe it. To know all the historical facts about Jesus Christ, to possess thorough knowledge of the facts about salvation, will do our children no good if they do not believe those facts to be true.

Saint Paul, in his defense before King Agrippa, asserted that Agrippa knew and even believed the facts about Jesus Christ. “King Agrippa,” asked Paul, “do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe” (Acts 26:27).

Yet mere knowledge and even assent to the truth, while essential, are not sufficient for our children to have saving faith. Knowledge enables our children to say, “Christ died and rose from the grave.” Assent takes the next step: “I am persuaded to believe that Christ died and rose from the grave.” According to the Reformers, these two are not enough. These two, someone has said, qualify one to be a demon; demons possess both right knowledge and even belief in its truth. One thing more is needed for saving faith.

Fiducia. The best English word for fiducia is trust. Our children must have knowledge, they must believe that it is true, and they must trust in it. It is one thing to know Christ died for our sins. It is another to add to that knowledge belief that Christ died for our sins. It is essential to take the next step, to place my trust in Christ to save me from my sins.

The difference is captured brilliantly by Charles Wesley’s hymn “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing”:

He breaks the power of reigning sin,
He sets the captive free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

The final phrase captures the idea of trust. Our children can know and even believe that salvation is found in Jesus Christ, but “His blood availed for me” expresses trust, trust that is essential to saving faith. Saving faith involves internal change — regenerating grace — that enables our children to trust Christ for salvation.

There is an element of saving faith that is not merely an objective embrace of truths about God. It is not enough to say Jesus is the Savior of sinners. Our children must be able to say, “He is my Savior.” They must trust Him for salvation. They must embrace Him and rest in Him as He has freely given grace through His holy life and sacrificial death.

Trust in Christ alone for salvation is described in scores of Bible passages. The prophets often describe it as “turning to” God (Ezek. 33). John 1 explains it as “receiving” Him. In the Bread of Life discourse, Jesus describes it as “eating” Him (John 6). The writer to the Hebrews says in chapter 6 that we are “to hold fast” to the hope. However it is expressed, our children must trust in Jesus Christ if they are to be saved.

How does this impact shepherding our children? We must always set before them the gospel truth. Every family should have some intentional and structured times in which the children are taught about what the Scriptures contain. We must faithfully urge them to believe the things we have taught. Some basic apologetics will inevitably be essential as we persuade them to believe the truth.

None of this will be enough unless they entrust themselves to Jesus Christ. If they are to be partakers of eternal life, they must trust in this Jesus Christ who saves. Our children must receive Him, turn to Him, hold fast to Him, and rest in Him alone for salvation. Ultimately, the work of the Holy Spirit must transform our children into people who rest in Christ alone for salvation. Our role is to bring them the gospel and urge them to embrace Christ the Savior.

I used to tell my children about the man who watched a tightrope walker crossing Niagara Falls pushing a wheel barrow. After seeing the feat performed repeatedly, he was asked by the performer, “Can I walk across the falls pushing this wheelbarrow.” “Yes,” was the answer (notitia). “Do you believe that I can do it again?” “Yes” (assensus). “Would you jump in the wheelbarrow and let me push you across?” (fiducia). This is the question of trust.

Our children must know that Jesus is the Savior who died for sinners. They must believe that He will save sinners who come to Him. But to cross from death to life they must believe that Jesus is their Savior. They must get into the wheelbarrow. What they will find is that He is willing and able to get them safely to the other shore.”

Encouragement from Calvin to Live Holy

Below is a quote from Calvin that I came across this morning while reading in the Institutes of the Christian Religion, book 3, chapter 6 entitled, The Life of the Christian Man.

Here, Calvin is first of all confronting those who confess Jesus as Lord but live in a way contrary to the gospel. His exhortation is strong. But afterwards he provides comfort to those who, although they may be truly striving after Christ, are frustrated with the slow progress when it comes to their growth in holiness.

If you take the time to read Calvin you will soon discover that he has the heart of a pastor. He understands that within the church there will always be some who need exhortation, and others who need comfort – he is careful to provide both.

“Doctrine is not an affair of the tongue, but of the life; is not apprehended by the intellect and memory merely, like other branches of learning; but is received only when it possesses the whole soul, and finds its seat and habitation in the inmost recesses of the heart. Let them, therefore, either cease to insult God, by boasting that they are what they are not, or let them show themselves not unworthy disciples of their divine Master. To doctrine in which our religion is contained we have given the first place, since by it our salvation commences; but it must be transfused into the breast, and pass into the conduct, and so transform us into itself, as not to prove unfruitful. If philosophers are justly offended, and banish from their company with disgrace those who, while professing an art which ought to be the mistress of their conduct, convert it into mere loquacious sophistry, with how much better reason shall we detest those flimsy sophists who are contented to let the Gospel play upon their lips, when, from its efficacy, it ought to penetrate the inmost affections of the heart, fix its seat in the soul, and pervade the whole man a hundred times more than the frigid discourses of philosophers?

I insist not that the life of the Christian shall breathe nothing but the perfect Gospel, though this is to be desired, and ought to be attempted. I insist not so strictly on evangelical perfection, as to refuse to acknowledge as a Christian any man who has not attained it. In this way all would be excluded from the Church, since there is no man who is not far removed from this perfection, while many, who have made but little progress, would be undeservedly rejected. What then? Let us set this before our eye as the end at which we ought constantly to aim. Let it be regarded as the goal towards which we are to run. For you cannot divide the matter with God, undertaking part of what his word enjoins, and omitting part at pleasure. For, in the first place, God uniformly recommends integrity as the principal part of his worship, meaning by integrity real singleness of mind, devoid of gloss and fiction, and to this is opposed a double mind; as if it had been said, that the spiritual commencement of a good life is when the internal affections are sincerely devoted to God, in the cultivation of holiness and justice. But seeing that, in this earthly prison of the body, no man is supplied with strength sufficient to hasten in his course with due alacrity, while the greater number are so oppressed with weakness, that hesitating, and halting, and even crawling on the ground, they make little progress, let every one of us go as far as his humble ability enables him, and prosecute the journey once begun. No one will travel so badly as not daily to make some degree of progress. This, therefore, let us never cease to do, that we may daily advance in the way of the Lord; and let us not despair because of the slender measure of success. How little soever the success may correspond with our wish, our labour is not lost when to-day is better than yesterday, provided with true singleness of mind we keep our aim, and aspire to the goal, not speaking flattering things to ourselves, nor indulging our vices, but making it our constant endeavour to become better, until we attain to goodness itself. If during the whole course of our life we seek and follow, we shall at length attain it, when relieved from the infirmity of flesh we are admitted to full fellowship with God.” (Calvin, 447)

The Envy of Eve: Finding Contentment in a Covetous World

One of my habits is to listen to podcasts throughout the week as I drive in the car and run. I plan to grow more consistent in passing along the good stuff to you so that you can also be edified.

As of late I have enjoyed listening to The Reformed Forum podcast. There are so many wonderful issues covered, and so many top-notch scholars interviewed in this broadcast – I would highly recommend that you listen in.

In particular, I would commend an episode entitled The Envy of Eve: Finding Contentment in a Covetous World. This is one of their “less academic” programs, but the content is so deeply practical – I think it would be worth your time to have a listen.

Supreme Court’s Ruling on DOMA

Below are a few links for those of you interested in learning more about the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn DOMA and how it might impact the church in the future.

I won’t be devoting any pulpit time to this issue (at least not at this time). We will continue with our sermon series on prayer this week. I can’t think of anything better to do than to pray:

“Our Father in heaven,

Hollowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts
as we also have forgiven our debters.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.”

After that, I will take you though a short sermon series on evangelism because, once we pray, I can’t think of anything better to do than learn to relate to others (most likely those who see things different than we see them), and to lovingly and winsomely share the gospel of Jesus Christ with them in all of its power and fullness.

My hope is that we will do this while trusting in his sovereign power.

Developing a Biblical Worldview For Our Children

I’ve been reading for the second time Family Driven Faith by Voddie Baucham. In chapter  four, Baucham discusses the importance of teaching our children a biblical worldview and cites a couples individual explain what a worldview is:

“A worldview, according to Francis Schaeffer, is the ‘grid through which [one] sees the world.’ In other words, a worldview is like a pair of glasses. Think about the first time you put on a pair of colored shades or placed someone else’s prescription lenses on your eyes. Immediately the world took on a new shade, or maybe even got bigger or smaller. That is exactly what a worldview doe… Chuck Colson and Nancy Pearcy put an even finer point on the matter in their book How Now Shall We Live? They define worldview as ‘the sum total of our beliefs about the world, the big picture that directs our daily decisions and actions’” (Pg. 72-73). [1]

Baucham provides the five basic elements of a worldview and explains that if we teach our children the correct biblical worldview they are more likely to act and make decisions that are consistent with the Christian faith beyond the years when mom and dad are watching.

While I know this post is not very specific, thinking through this concept has helped me realized that I can begin to help establish and build the foundation for a biblical worldview for my young son by being intentional with the vocabulary I use, the simple conversations I have with him, and any other opportunities the Lord may provide.

As parents, if we are not intentional and have not thought through our end result in our parenting and with our children the time will pass us quickly bye.

I encourage you parents to refer back to the Rite of Passage Parenting Guide on a somewhat regular basis to revise the goals and objectives you have set for each of your children. (If you have not received one of these booklets than I would like to sit down and meet with your family).

Visiting The Iniquity of the Fathers Upon the Children

This week’s catechism questions, from the Westminster Shorter Catechism, addresses the second of the Ten Commandments:

“‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.'” – Deuteronomy 5:8–9

While the reformation of the 16th century heavily focused on the doctrine of salvation, there was also a major emphasis on reforming the family back to the biblical standards. John Calvin had much to say about the family and put a heavy emphasis on the role of the father.  Below is a brief expert from Calvin on Deuteronomy 5:9.

“But when God declares that He will cast back the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of the children, He does not mean that He will take vengeance on poor wretches who have never deserved anything of the sort, but that He is at liberty to punish the crimes of the fathers upon their children and descendants, with the proviso that they too may be justly punished, as being imitators of their fathers. If any should object, that this is nothing more than to repay every one according to his works, we must remember that, whenever God blinds the children of the ungodly, casts them into a state of reprobation, (conjict in sesum reprobum), and smites them with a spirit of madness or folly, so that they give themselves up to foul desires, and hasten to their final destruction, – in this way the iniquity of the fathers is visited on their children.”[1]

I recently read an article titled, “The Greatest Untapped Evangelistic Opportunity Before The Modern Church” which provided statistics that supported the principal promised in Deuteronomy 5:9. “Of all the studies recently published, the most telling related to the fathers role in discipleship is this: according to a report published by The Baptist Press if a child is the first person in the household to become a Christian, there is a 3.5{e0b72a53c242df1424785628340537005f8b2ebeecfbb0205a95286f7b4c8fc9} probability everyone in the household will follow. If the mother is first, there is a 17{e0b72a53c242df1424785628340537005f8b2ebeecfbb0205a95286f7b4c8fc9} chance everyone else in the household will submit to Christ. Here’s the clincher: If the father professes Christ first, there is a 93{e0b72a53c242df1424785628340537005f8b2ebeecfbb0205a95286f7b4c8fc9} probability that everyone else in the house will heed the Gospel call.” [2]

There are a couple important principles we as fathers, mothers, grandfathers, and grandmothers, and the church as a whole can glean from these great truths.

First, we see the importance of fathers in the lives of their children to first and foremost teach them the faith in both word and action. Even if the mother is very knowledgeable and godly woman, she cannot replace the role of the father that God has designed.

Second, the command in scripture for fathers to be responsible for raising their children in the faith in no way diminishes the significant role of the mother within the family. Moms play a vital role in raising their children in the Lord. Timothy’s spiritual maturity had a lot to do with a God fearing mother and grandmother, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well” (2 Timothy 1:5). This truth should be of great encouragement to all mothers, especially to those who find themselves raising a child with a physically or spiritually absent father. It’s by God’s grace that he equips both mothers and fathers to raise their children. And in that grace he has also provided the church to support and encourage parents in this process.

Third, we must be careful not to draw unfair conclusions about each other’s parenting practices. Deuteronomy 5:9, much like Proverbs 22:6, (train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it) are principals and not hard and fast rules. A parent can teach their child the faith “perfectly” and they can still turn from the Lord. Salvation is of the Lord; therefore, we are to teach our children and to trust solely upon our sovereign Lord. We can take comfort that God does much of his work through the family but it is no guarantee. Therefore, we must be careful of being overly critical of ourselves or others if our children do not remain in the Lord.

Fourth, Deuteronomy 5:9 does not require perfection from fathers but it does require that they show up to battle. As a father of a young son and another one on the way there are many times I have failed as a parent. But just as in our relationship with Christ, we strive for righteousness, and trust in the grace and mercy of our sovereign Lord. As fathers, we are called to personally and actively teach and lead our children in the faith. The only way we fail at this is if we passively sit back and let the brief time we have with our children pass us by. At Emmaus, we are blessed to have many fathers who are striving to lead their families as God has called them to. Father’s of Emmaus let’s continue to encourage and spur each other on in teaching and leading our children in the faith, passing on what God has given us for generations to come!
