GCG Questions for Sermon on 03/23/14

Bible Text: Psalm 51

1. When you sin, have you learned to repent and run to God? Or do you struggle with shame and hiding from God as Adam and Eve did? Share and explain.

2. In the case of David, one sin leads to a series of other sins, as he attempted to cover his sins rather than repent and confess. Have you seen this progression in your life? Why do we often try to cover our sins rather than confess and repent?

3. According to Psalm 51, what are the appropriate biblical steps to proper repentance? Discuss. See sermon notes at emmauscf.org/sermons

4. Have you recently reflected on what Christ has truly done for us on the cross? Or have you grown slack in daily confessing, repenting, and trusting? Share.

5. What is the most profound thing you learn in Psalm 51 when looking at David’s repentance? Why? Share.

Doctrinal Standard WSC #12:

Q. What did God’s providence specifically do for man whom He created?

A. After the creation God made a covenant with man to give him life, if he perfectly obeyed; God told him not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil or he would die.

New Song: “Not in Me”

Hello church!

This coming Sunday (March 23rd) we will be singing a new song called “Not in Me.” Before we sing it together on Sunday, I wanted to share the song with you so that you could get a jump start on learning it and know why I have chosen to add it to the list of songs we sing at Emmaus.

If you’ve been keeping up with Emmaus Essentials, you’ll notice how closely this song coincides with Chapter 11 of the LBC (Lesson 19 from the week of March 9th).  This song is all about the fact that there is nothing that we can possibly do to earn forgiveness – our justification – but that only in Christ is our righteousness found. It is a beautiful declaration of the Gospel. Read the lyrics below and listen to the song:

No list of sins I have not done,
No list of virtues I pursue,
No list of those I am not like,
Can earn myself a place with You.
O God! Be merciful to me—
I am a sinner through and through!
My only hope of righteousness
Is not in me, but only You.

No humble dress, no fervent prayer,
No lifted hands, no tearful song,
No recitation of the truth
Can justify a single wrong.
My righteousness is Jesus’ life,
My debt was paid by Jesus’ death,
My weary load was borne by Him
And he alone can give me rest.

No separation from the world,
No work I do, no gift I give,
Can cleanse my conscience, cleanse my hands;
I cannot cause my soul to live.
But Jesus died and rose again—
The pow’r of death is overthrown!
My God is merciful to me
And merciful in Christ alone.

Of Adoption & Of Sanctification – Emmaus Essentials Episode 20

Episode 20 of Emmaus Essentials is up! This episode covers chapters 12 & 13 of the Confession on the topics of adoption and sanctification. The doctrine of adoption is indeed a beautiful one! Here we explore the fact of our adoption in Christ, along with the blessings and result of it. Understanding sanctification is helpful in a practical way. Here we answer the question, what is sanctification? and also discuss the difference between positional and personal sanctification. I hope you are strengthened and encouraged by the teaching!

Our Sermon Text for This Sunday: Psalm 51

Catechism  Instruction of Gods Word

Doctrinal Standard WSC #11

  • Q. What are the decrees of God?
  • A. The decrees of God are His eternal purpose, according to the counsel of His will, whereby for His own glory, He has fore-ordained whatsoever comes to pass (Eph. 1:11; Rom. 11:36; Dan. 4:35)

Memory Verse(s)

  • Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him“(Ephesians 1:3-4, ESV).

Scripture

  • Study Passage: Ephesians 1:3-14
  • Support Passages: Romans 8:26-39, 9:11-18; Acts 2:23, 4:24-28; John 6:44,65; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; I Peter 2:8; Genesis 18:19; Isaiah 5:1-7; Deuteronomy 7:6-11;
  • Bible Story: Genesis 37:1-28, 50:15-21

Thoughts

  • Chapter 3 of the London Baptist Confession of Faith explains the decrees of God. In addition, Joe expounds on this topic in lessons 8 and 9 in the Emmaus Essentials course on the London Confession of 1689 found here.
  • There are a few prerequisites to understanding the decrees of God. First, it is often unclear to see how God is going to use a tragedy or difficult time in someone’s life while it is taking place. Joseph saw nothing but complete evil and despair when his brothers sold him into slavery. It was only after the fact that Joseph saw the plan of God. Second, the dichotomy of God’s sovereignty and mans responsibility is something one will never completely understand. While we will never know in this lifetime how it all works the Bible strongly teaches that God is sovereign and has ordained things while still giving us the responsibility to act and response to the choices we face.
  • The fact that God has a purpose and is sovereign over all should fill us with humility and confidence that God will finish the work He has started in our lives.

Discussion Questions

  • How does it make you feel that God is in control of everything?
  • How do you think Joseph felt when is brother sold him into slavery? Did he know what God was going to do?
  • If God is in control of everything why do bad things happen to good people?
  • What has God promised to those who love Him? (Romans 8:28-29).
  • What should be our attitude when difficult events happen in our lives?
  • Ephesians 1 says God chose us for salvation before the earth was even created. Why did he do that?
  • If God has chosen us for salvation and is in control of everything what should be our response?

Emmaus Essentials – LBC 1689 – Episode 19 – Of Justification

Episode 19 of Emmaus Essentials – LBC 1689 is up and ready for your consumption. The subject is chapter 11 of the Confession – Of Justification. This is truly a vital doctrine and I would highly encourage you to listen in. Questions considered are: What is justification? How is justification received? What is the basis for our justification? When is a person justified? What is the relationship between justification and sanctification? And, how were those who lived before Christ justified? I hope your are blessed by it!
