The Girls and Boys Catechism: A Resource for Younger Children

I had previously posted the first ten questions from the Boys and Girls Catechism and mentioned how they were developed to be used with our younger children. After further study and discussion with the Elders of Emmaus, we believe that that the entire Boys and Girls Catechism would be a great resource for parents to use alongside the Emmaus Catechism.

I’m providing a side-by-side comparison of the Emmaus and Boys and Girls Catechism. The intent of this document is for parents to supplement the Boys and Girls Catechism with the Emmaus Catechism when applicable. For example, the Westminster Shorter Catechism standard #4 asks “What is God?” the answer is “God is a spirit, Whose being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth are infinite, eternal, and unchangeable.”

The Girls and Boys Catechism addresses this standard in four separate questions:
GBC 9.Q. Who is God? A. God is a Spirit, and does not have a body like men.
GBC 10.Q. Where is God? A. God is everywhere.
GBC 11.Q. Can you see God? A. No. I cannot see God, but he always sees me.
GBC 12.Q. Does God know all things? A. Yes. Nothing can be hidden from God.
GBC 13.Q. Can God do all things? A. Yes. God can do all his holy will.

As you review this document, you will noticed that all the doctrinal standards do not align perfectly. Much effort was made to align them as close as possible.

It is also important to note that it is still our desire for our children to memorize and understand the Emmaus catechism. We believe that the Girls and Boys catechism can be a great resource to help teach our toddlers through early elementary age children the essential truths of our faith.

The side-by-side comparison of the Emmaus and Girls and Boys Catechism can be downloaded here.

Our Sermon Text for This Sunday: Galatians 5:7-15

Catechism  Instruction of Gods Word

Doctrinal Standard WSC #2

  • Q. What authority from God directs us how to glorify and enjoy Him?
  • A. The only authority for glorifying and enjoying Him is the bible, which is the word of God and is made up of the Old and New Testaments.

Memory Verse(s)

  • “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether” (Psalm 19:7-9, ESV).

Scripture

  • Study Passage: Psalm 19
  • Support Passages: Romans 1:18-32; I Corinthians 2; Hebrews 1:1-3; John 1:14
  • Bible Story: Exodus 32:1-21; Exodus 24:4, 7-8, 12: Israelites worship a golden calf.

Thoughts

  • There are two types of revelation: general and special revelation. General revelation is what we can learn about God from the things we can see. For example, we know that God is orderly because we see His creation is full of order. Special revelation is information about God found only in the scriptures. Scripture is the only place that informs us that God has sent His Son to be the substitute for our sins.
  • The Bible is the only source of the saving knowledge of God therefore we must study it and follow its commands. Jesus said that if we love the Father we will keep His commands. We study and obey not to gain merit with God but to shows our love and respect for God. Our Father’s commands are not intended to be burdensome but an abundant life freed from sin.

Discussion Questions

  • Why is obeying God’s commands considered a way of glorifying Him?
  • Why is obeying God’s commands considered an enjoyable thing?
  • Why did God give us commands on what to do and what not to do?
  • Compare how obeying God’s commands is like obeying your parent’s commands.
  • What does obeying God reveal about our relationship with Him?
  • Jesus says his commands are not burdensome. Do you find this true? Explain.
  • What does creation teach us about God? What can’t creation teach us about God?

Catechism  Instruction of Gods Word

Doctrinal Standards WSC #1

  • Q. What is man’s primary purpose?
  • A. Man’s primary purpose is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.

Memory Verse(s)

  • “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31, ESV).

Scripture

  • Study Passage: Acts 17:16-32
  • Support Passages: Psalm 73:24-28; Romans 14:7-12; I Corinthians 6:13-20; John 15:8; Romans 15:5-8
  • Bible Story: Daniel 4:28-37; Nebuchadnezzar’s Fall

Thoughts

  • In order to live a purposeful and meaningful life we must glorify and enjoy God in all that we do. God has given us our skills, abilities, and even our life therefore we are to praise and thank Him for all that we have accomplished and all that He has done for us.
  • Before the fall mankind was God centered. After the fall mankind is self-centered.
  • Glorify – reflecting God’s glory. Creation reflects God’s glory like a mirror. Psalm 19:1 (ESV)

Discussion Questions

  • How did Nebuchadnezzar eventually glorify God?
  • How can you glorify God in your daily life?
  • Who glorifies God more: a pastor or a mechanic? Explain
  • What does it mean to be Christ-centered?
  • Nebuchadnezzar was not Christ (God) centered. What was at the center of his life?
  • What are some things that might take the place of Christ as the center of someone’s life?
  • The Bible teaches that believers are the temple of God in which Christ dwells. How does this help our ability to be Christ centered?

  • Overview
“The Republic of Zambia is a nation which lies in the heart of southern Africa. Formerly the British colony of Northern Rhodesia, it obtained its independence on October 24, 1964. The people of Zambia are most concentrated within the Copperbelt Province in the northwest and in the capital city of Lusaka in the south. Though the country is rich in natural resources (most notably copper), its infrastructure is highly undeveloped, and approximately seventy percent of its population lives below the national poverty line. Zambia is a representative democracy with a multi-party system of government in which the president serves as both head of state and head of government. Zambia’s last few presidents have created policies that are now furthering the country’s economic reform and progression, though like many other African nations, it still struggles with the strain of AIDS-related issues.
Zambia has a rich history of missionary efforts to reach its eighty people groups, including the activities of pioneer missionary David Livingstone in the mid-1800s. Its people, which are predominately from Bantu tribal groups, are made up mostly of professing Christians (eighty-seven percent), with slightly more than twenty-five percent claiming to be Evangelical. While there are numerous challenges facing the Zambian church, the future remains bright and hopeful. Strategic church-planting efforts have been made throughout the country, especially in the centers of population, and now there are numerous healthy, vibrant churches throughout the country. This concentration on church planting has begun to spill over into other African nations, as well as the rural, tribal areas of Zambia. The Church now finds itself in need of renewed vigor as an older generation of faithful pastors and missionaries pass the baton to fresh faces” (heartcrymissionary.com).

Preparing for the Lords Day

Our Sermon Text for This Sunday: Galatians 4:1-7 (the scriptural text may slightly change)

“I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything, 2 but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father. 3 In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.”

A Catechism For Pre-School Age Children

The Westminster Shorter Catechism and Baptist Catechism is often wordy and filled with vocabulary that is not very practical for toddlers. In 1798, Richard Cecil complied a Baptist “Catechism for Girls and Boys.” The first 8 to 10 questions are intended to be used for children from 2 to 4 years of age. These ten questions teach our children about the nature of God, mankind and creation, and the purpose of creation.

I believe that these 10 questions can be a great resource to introduce our young children to the process of catechizing and teaching the most rudimentary truths of God and man.

1. Q. Who made you?
A. God made me (Gn 1:26, 27; 2:7; Ec 12:1; Acts 17:24-29).

2. Q. What else did God make?
A. God made all things (Gn 1, esp. verses 1, 31; Acts 14:15; Rm 11:36; Col 1:16).

3. Q. Why did God make you and all things?
A. For his own glory (Ps 19:1; Jer 9:23, 24; Rv 4:11).

4. Q. How can you glorify God?
A. By loving him and doing what he commands (Ec 12:13; Mk 12:29-31; Jn 15:8-10; 1 Cor 10:31).

5. Q. Why ought you to glorify God?
A. Because he made me and takes care of me (Rm 11:36; Rv 4:11; cf. Dan 4:37).

6. Q. Are there more gods than one?
A. There is only one God (Deut 6:4; Jer 10:10; Mk 12:29; Acts 17:22-31).

7. Q. In how many persons does this one God exist?
A. In three persons (Mt 3:16, 17; Jn 5:23; 10:30; 14:9, 10; 15:26; 16:13-15; 1 Jn 5:20; Rv 1:4, 5).

8. Q. Who are they?
A. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (Mt 28:19; 2 Cor 13:14; 1 Pet 1:2; Jude 20, 21).

9. Q. Who is God?
A. God is a Spirit, and does not have a body like men (Jn 4:24; 2 Cor 3:17; 1 Tim 1:17).

10. Q. Where is God?
A. God is everywhere (Ps 139:7-12; Jer 23:23,24; Acts 17:27,28).
